Julie Oxenforth Totemic

Sat, January 13, 2024 - Sun, March 24, 2024

Julie Oxenforth recycles found objects, images and various materials to produce curious phenomena and new narratives. Trusting the process she focuses on the dynamics of form and space, colour, line and movement. Julie graduated from Sunderland University in 2005 with a distinction in MA Fine Art. Here, her tutor described her as a Swiss roll; by osmosis her experiences, environment and multiple interests are rolled up into one whole installation or body of work. With a neuro-divergent mind leaping about in different directions, she is constantly seeking connections flowing through seemingly disparate thoughts and themes. Some of the objects she has collected were found in Egypt, a place where she lived, worked and exhibited for 7 years. Others are from house clearance of the parental home, loaded with significance, memory and loss.

She has exhibited in numerous groups shows, and created solo installations in gallery and off-site spaces, often in deprived areas, in the UK and Egypt. She was a member of an artist collective Caravan in Egypt for several consecutive years, resulting in her artwork being sited at The British Council in Cairo. This exhibition serves as a culmination of the last 5 years spent as a Ropewalk studio artist.
